Battle of the Books!

Do you love to read? Do you like to explore new places and go on exciting adventures with the characters in a book? Do you LOVE competition?  Then: Join the ECA C.O.L.E. Battle of the Books Team for 2019-2020! The team is open to 4th-5th grade.
What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a fun book trivia competition based on NCSLMA’s eBOB reading list of 15 books.  As a public charter school, we would compete in the C.O.L.E. competition against other charter schools which follows the same rules and book lists as the traditional BOB competition.  This school year’s competition will be held at East Wake Academy on April 18. A small group of highly prepared students on our school’s team will go on to compete in this competition.
What do I have to do?

As a member of the ECA Battle of the Books team, you will need to read at least 5 of the books from the 2019-2020 eBOB book list.  You will receive a subscription to battle of the books training website and will be expected to practice answering questions based on the books you read by playing online games and battles with other team members throughout the year.  The team will meet Fridays once a month at the school in the first semester and biweekly in the second semester of school in order to better prepare for the end-of-year competition. During meetings, we will play practice trivia games based on our book list and do fun team building activities.  All students are required to be well prepared, to read independently, and to have outstanding behavior.
How do I join the team?

Email Caitlin Hawks at or Amber Huston at and request to be added to the team.  Then come to the first meeting on Friday, September 13th, at 3:30.  Spots are limited to 20.  If there are more students interested than the number of spots available, team members will be selected by lottery.  The supply fee for the team is $12 per member. Scholarships are available. Books are available in the ECA Media Center and Durham County Library.  Happy Reading
